Family photo printed as a custom wall mural behind a sofa in a living room

How to Turn a Family Photo into a Custom Wall Mural

A family photo usually lives in a frame on a shelf. Printed as a wall mural, it becomes the first thing everyone sees when they walk into the room. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before you order a custom wall mural from your own photo: which pictures work, how sizing works, and how to put it up without hiring anyone.

Can you really turn any photo into a wall mural?

Almost any clear photo can become a custom wall mural. Family portraits, beach vacations, a favorite landscape you shot yourself, your child's drawing, or your own digital artwork all work. What matters most is that the photo is sharp, well lit, and that the most important part of the picture — usually faces — sits away from the very edges.

Which photos work best for a family photo wallpaper?

  • Use the original file. Send the photo straight from your camera or phone, not a screenshot or a picture saved from social media. Those are compressed and lose detail.
  • Pick a photo with room around the subject. A little extra sky, sand, or background gives us space to fit your exact wall without cutting anyone out.
  • Good light beats a perfect pose. Natural daylight photos print with the richest color.
  • Avoid heavy filters. Strong filters can look much darker or more saturated at wall size.

Can I use a photo from my iPhone?

Yes. Recent phone cameras capture far more detail than most people expect, and a wall mural is viewed from several feet away, not up close like a print in your hand. Send us the largest version of the photo you have. Before anything is printed, we check the quality and tell you honestly if the file is too small for your wall, or if it would benefit from enhancement.

Will my photo be cropped?

Every wall has its own shape, and most photos do not match it exactly. That is why we print custom wall murals to your exact wall dimensions and show you how your photo will fit before printing. If the photo is taller or wider than your wall, we discuss which part to keep, so nobody loses the top of their head.

How to measure your wall

Measure the width and the height of the wall at the widest points, in inches. Our murals are printed in 24-inch wide panels, and we round up to full panels at no extra cost. If you are unsure, order slightly larger — the extra can be trimmed with the knife included in your free application kit. The minimum size is 23 x 70 inches.

Does it work on a stairway or a very large wall?

Yes. A stairway wall is one of the best places for a family photo mural, because everyone passes it every day. We print in panels to any height and width, so large feature walls and tall stairwells are no problem. For angled stairway walls, measure the tallest point and the full width; the angle is trimmed during installation.

Peel and stick or traditional?

For most homes, peel and stick is the easiest choice: no paste, no water, and it removes cleanly when you move or redecorate. That makes it ideal for renters. Traditional paste-applied fabric wallpaper is the classic option for a permanent install. You can compare all three materials in our guide Peel & Stick, Traditional, or Vinyl? How to Choose the Right Material.

Do I need a professional installer?

No. A peel and stick wall mural is a DIY project. Clean the wall, start the first panel straight with a level, and smooth each panel with the squeegee from the center outwards. Most walls take under an hour. Our step-by-step installation guide walks you through every panel.

Will it damage my walls?

On a smooth, fully cured painted wall, peel and stick wallpaper comes off cleanly. Wait at least 3–4 weeks after painting before you apply it, and avoid textured or damp walls. When it is time to change it, follow our guide on how to remove peel and stick wallpaper without damaging your walls.

Is it safe for a nursery or a kids' room?

Every WAW Decors mural is printed fresh using GREENGUARD Gold & ECOLOGO certified HP Latex water-based inks — odorless, non-toxic, and safe for kids, nurseries, and pets.

How long does it take?

Every mural is made to order in our Texas workshop. Printing takes 2–5 business days, and delivery within the US takes another 3–8 business days, with free shipping. If you are planning a family photo wall as a holiday gift, order early so it arrives on time.
